Topic: Dimp Q&A

I'm Sijmen (pronounced: Simon), the author of Dimp.

Here's a topic where you can ask questions about the program and I'll answer them as well as I can. I'll start off with some of the FAQs:

ZOMG when does it come OUT?!?!?!?!

A public preview will be released in a few days. This preview will have one stick figure and one scene.

While working on the full version, for which I did not yet set a release date, I'll take over some full features to new public preview versions, too.

Does it do X, Y and/or Z?

The final version of Dimp Animator will be released with the following features:

  • Place as many figures in a scene as you like.

  • Multiple scenes.

  • Custom stick figures. In 1.0 this will probably just be adding and removing bones and changing shapes, no colors and thickness adjustments yet.

  • Export to video and still pictures.

  • Support for loading and saving .stk figures.

I'll be adding updates to Dimp (like 1.1, 1.2) with an extended feature set.

Will it be free/what will it cost?

It will not be free, but the price will be less than $20. A final price has not been decided yet.

Is there a free version?

There will be a free, but limited trial. I haven't decided on the limitations yet.

Is it a direct download or does it come on a CD or DVD?

Dimp Animator will be a direct download.

How does one pay for Dimp?

I'll sell it using PayPal. You'll be able to pay using a credit card or any bank account added to your PayPal account.

Can you create custom objects, like guns?

Yes. But there are some things you might not be able to do. Dimp 1.0 will have support for custom figures, but the customization options will be limited. I'll try to address that in updates. Also, you can't 'attach' stick figures to a part of another one. So you can't make a gun and stick it on a figure. You'd have to animate them separately—or you could add the gun to the stick figure itself.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here.

Re: Dimp Q&A

Will later versions of dimp allow you to make items Ie:guns ,tools, etc.?
and will Dimp be D2D(direct to download) or will it be DVD or Cd?

Re: Dimp Q&A

I don't know how much I'm permitted to tell you guys, but I think it's safe to say that when Sijmen mentions "custom stick figures", this also includes guns, etc.

I'm also confident I'm not messing up when I tell you that it will be "Direct to download". Selling CD's as a hardcopy is a great way to ensure a back-up, but it really is the way of the past.
The simple ease and simplicity of automated pay then downloading service is what I predict will be the only way to buy Dimp.

Re: Dimp Q&A

Yeah Dimp wil definitely be a direct download.

Sean is also right about the custom figures. I might be a little bit like the Pivot 2 series after upgrades. Eventually I'd like to add sprites as well, but that's futurespeak.

edit: check the first post for more info, I've put it in there.

Re: Dimp Q&A

What made me believe it was "Direct Download" was that, as previously stated, exporting CD's is becoming a thing of the past. The time you'd spend organizing exports to various locations around the world would be too great. What's more, he'd have to involve various other companies, such as those for boxing and exporting.

All-in-all Sijmen would be lucky to make it out with 70-50% of the original price.

Re: Dimp Q&A

I wrote Dimp as a Mac app from the ground up, so there's no chance of a Windows version in the near future.

Re: Dimp Q&A

if you buy one version, will you be able to upgrade to later versions or do you have to buy every new one?

Re: Dimp Q&A

This is a difficult question to answer because it covers the whole of the app's lifecycle.

What I can promise is that I won't charge for upgrades until Dimp's scope is changed significantly, like when you almost can't tell it from the original version.

Re: Dimp Q&A

ok good, just will we be able to import stks like weapons?

Re: Dimp Q&A

I've got the stk format figured out I think, and it will be in Dimp 1.0. So far I've been able to read every stk I tried with the test app, so I think YES smile

Re: Dimp Q&A

great, now i dont have to make my own weapons big_smile

Re: Dimp Q&A

Zen, please avoid posting 2 times consecutively as this can potentially aggravate many users.

The benefit of allowing .stk files is that Sijmen will be able to tap into a much greater audience: one that already exists. What's more, it will greatly improve the experience of those using Dimp already as they will have access to all Pivot files.

If you want to grab some .stk files, you could check out either the Droidz.org forum or that of DarkDemon.org.

I can not imagine either making revenue specifically by being exclusive to Pivot, and therefore I for-see in the near future, a Dimp section in each?

Welcome Coha. wink

Re: Dimp Q&A

There will be a free version but the best will be at a small charge.

Sijmen devotes his full-time towards programming, especially Dimp. This means that he has invested a lot of money into the project and he therefore needs to make some of that back.

$20 is really nothing nowadays and if sales are good, it's not hard to imagine that the price could be lowered. Dimp will prove to be a much more in-depth and well-structured program than Pivot I'm sure, moral of the story: you get what you pay for.

~ Sean

Re: Dimp Q&A

Sean, there won't be a free version. Just a trial. Great explanation though.

Re: Dimp Q&A

Ah I see.

Well it's obvious that in order for you to continue living off your work and updating Dimp, you will have to be able to get most of that money back, and potentially some revenue to help fund future releases.

Dimp promises to be a lot more than just a simple stick-figure animator, and therefore $20 won't be much in the future.

Since Pivot has been taken as the example, Pivot has seen 3 main upgrades not including the new Beta. Unlike this, Dimp will be constantly re-worked and improved. More features will be added constantly, and updates will be available straight from the program.

You're getting a program with much better architecture, a promising future and constant service/upgrades.

Re: Dimp Q&A

Yup, it will be jam-packed with user-friendliness, powerful architecture, addable/updatable features and there are big plans for Dimp in the future.

~ Sean

Re: Dimp Q&A

heck,if he gets enough money here,he could lower the price by %50-60!

and question, dimp will be able to buy in american dollars right?

Re: Dimp Q&A

Dimp's default currency will be the Euro.
Purchases of the product can be made in any country with any currency so long as you have internet and the nation has internet-banking support. wink

This means that any country that is not a "3rd-world" country (so to speak) should prove to have almost no difficulties in purchasing Dimp. All money is converted in to Euros.
(Keep in touch with the current exchange-rates to see what price you'll be getting.)

~ Sean

Re: Dimp Q&A

Haha yes I'll be selling Dimp in euros but you pay with PayPal (it support credit cards without signing up, too) so it'll just tell you what the price in dollars is.

Re: Dimp Q&A

ok great!
I think america, the place that created internet has that
